Dr Chau is passionate about improving public mental health awareness and destigmatising psychiatric illness. Besides treating individual patients, Dr Chau is actively engaged in public presentations, discussion panels and workplace training across a variety of settings including local, organisational and corporate. His ultimate goal is to create change at a systemic level so that mental health support is integrated seamlessly into the lives of athletes.

 

TREATMENT Philosophy

Integral to Dr Chau’s patient-focussed care style is the development of strong professional therapeutic relationships. His philosophy of collaboration will ensure that Dr Chau and his patients work together as a team with open and honest communication. Any relevant diagnoses and treatment plans will always be discussed with his patients and tailored to their specific needs.

He sincerely believes in a holistic approach to recovery and adopts the biopsychosocial model of healthcare. Dr Chau thoroughly understands that patient privacy is paramount and maintains strict controls over patient information in accordance with the Health Records Act 2001.


CAREER EXPERIENCE

Dr Chau is a senior consultant psychiatrist accredited at The Melbourne Clinic working as a part of the Addiction Unit Team and helping patients recover through the 28-day in-hospital rehabilitation program. His outpatient clinic is located at the Professorial Suites nearby.

Dr Chau’s extensive experience places him in a special position in managing not only the mental health of athletes but also any concurrent addiction/problem gambling issues, as he has expert understanding of how these interrelate. Other psychiatrists often refer to Dr Chau for second opinions and advice in these areas.

Dr Chau is involved with the Psychiatric Advice and Consultation Service and provides telephone support to General Practitioners in order to enhance their treatment of patients with mental illness.

He is also an expert affiliated with Micurae providing teleconference assessments, second opinions and direct consultations of international patients.

Dr Chau has also worked at The Royal Melbourne Hospital inpatient unit managing acutely unwell patients whilst simultaneously holding the position of Academic Fellow with The University of Melbourne.

He was previously a member of the RANZCP/RACGP General Practitioners and Psychiatrists committee involved in the development, planning and coordination of joint projects, research and educational events.

Dr Chau completed his psychiatry training at The Austin Hospital which allowed him to acquire experience across various unique settings including treating current and past members of the Australian Defence Force, patients with a forensic history at The Thomas Embling Hospital as well as patients with cancer via the oncology consultation-liaison department.
